We’re excited to announce that on April 1st the Friends of Brook Green (FBG) will finally take over full responsibility for the running of the tennis courts from Hammersmith and Fulham Council. This will mean that all bookings for the courts and responsibility for coaching on the courts are managed by FBG. We’ve provided community updates on this project and this is the final phase of a process that began in 2011. (see Background Information below)
Tennis Court Bookings:
The Friends of Brook Green Tennis Club (FBGTC) is offering free membership to all users. Please use the link below to become a member and gain access to the online booking system. Members are allowed to book courts up to 14 days in advance. The courts are available from 07:00 until 21:00 every day but when using lights, please note that planning regulations mean that they cannot be used beyond 20:30. The court charges will continue to be in line with the Council rates.
Tennis Coach Licence:
From April 1st FBG are also responsible for ensuring that all coaching that takes place on the tennis courts adheres to LTA Guidelines. This includes adherence to the LTA What’s the Score: Safe and Inclusive Tennis policy. Working in partnership with the LTA, a new Tennis Coach Licence was created for the FBGTC and applications for the licence are now being processed. Following on from the review of initial applications, interviews will be taking place later this month with a decision made on the award of the Licence by March 24th. The Interview Panel includes representatives from LTA, FBG, and an Independent local Community Charity.
Part of the funding that enabled FBG to resurface the tennis courts and install lighting came from the Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund. A condition of the funding was that once the venue was complete we achieved Tennismark +. This ensures that we provide a return on the investment Sport England have made in our facilities and increase participation in the sport locally. We also received funding from the Mayor of Londons Sports Fund. For more information on Tennismark please use the link below.
In 2011 FBG were notified that the Council were planning to tender out the Tennis Courts on Brook Green. This was also to include the run-down pavilion which housed toilets (hardly ever open), a Serco refuse office and an unused tennis office. At the time, the courts and pavilion were in desperate need of capital expenditure which was not available within the Council. This would have led to the courts and pavilion being taken over by a commercial operator.
Following some investigation into the capital outlay required, we decided to approach the Council to understand if they would be willing to allow FBG to operate the facility. They granted us a window to prepare and present a formal proposal to them. This was always going to be a big challenge for a charity operated by volunteers but one which we embraced. A timeline of what followed is detailed below:
